The Great Books List for Ancient History

Reading and selecting The Great Books can be a challenging process and one not taken lightly. I have a very detailed post about The Great Books of Classic Literature that can help you learn more about these works and their authors.

PARENTS! A word of caution about some of these books — please review these books or pre-read them yourselves before handing over to your child. Some of these books have very mature content that you may not want to expose them to you just yet. A good place to get a review is Goodreads and Amazon

Epic of Gilgamesh – based on my research, this is a good translation and it skips over the seductive scenes if that concerns you. This version is also a recommended translation but I am not sure about the scenes in it.

The Histories by Herodotus – (Penguin Classics Edition) and Landmark Edition are both good versions

The Birds by Aristophanes – this version has 4 of his plays including Lysistrata

The Republic by Plato

The Aeneid by Virgil

Metamorphoses by Ovid

The Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans by Plutarch

Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare ——– Julius Caesar No Fear version of Shakespeare
